Cumbria Rural Academy is based at Bigland Hall near Haverthwaite in South Cumbria. A Community Interest Company, they work to improve people’s lives through events and courses using horses and equine therapeutic approaches. These range from engaging with often disadvantaged young people through their Alternative Education programme to working with business people to develop communication, self-awareness, and leadership skills.

Cumbria Rural Academy would like to show others in the third and public sectors in Cumbria what can be achieved through their equine-based work. On Tuesday 21st March, they will be hosting an event which will showcase two of their programmes.

The Harness Change workshop encourages people to reflect on their communication and teamworking styles, getting immediate feedback from the horses themselves as they reflect and respond to our intentions and behaviours. Originally designed as a course aimed at business leaders, it covers a range of topics including problem-solving, leadership, confidence, communication, team building and self-management.

The Alternative Education Programme is primarily aimed at young people who do not fit in well with conventional education approaches. Focusing on areas such as communication, confidence and resilience, young people will work with the horses responsibly and with empathy and will get immediate feedback from the horses’ reactions and behaviour. Young people are also encouraged to explore their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
